Dr. Martin Luther King and America's Self-Evident Truth

Monday, February 20

Jefferson Educational Society

Featuring Parris Baker, Ph.D.

In Dr. King's iconic "I Have a Dream" speech, he referenced a passage of the Declaration of Independence, "we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, ..." This presentation will examine the meaning of "self-evident truths" based on political and cultural hermeneutics, in 1776, in 1963, and in our post-modern America. Audience participation will be encouraged.

The History of Newspapers and Newsmakers in Erie (and PA)

Newspapers have been a part of the American scene since colonial days and a part of Erie since the early 1800s. What were they? Who did they cover? How did they influence their communities? Two veteran Erie newspaper voices -- brothers Kevin Cuneo and Pat Cuneo -- put the spotlight on newspapers and newsmakers and invite the Jefferson audience to join them.

Neighborhood Revitalization in Erie's West Bayfront: OWB (Our West Bayfront)

Since it was formally incorporated in 2016, Our West Bayfront has been coordinating neighborhood revitalization efforts in Erie's West Bayfront neighborhoods, a diverse community of 12,000 residents and hundreds of businesses, organizations, and other community stakeholders. Anna Frantz, Executive Director of OWB, will discuss OWB's community-led approach to neighborhood revitalization, the partnerships that support this work, and exciting initiatives in development for 2023.

Did you know that EC3 is in the Corry area? Learn about the development of America's newest community college in this presentation by Erie County Community College's founding president Dr. Chris Gray. Dr. Gray will provide an overview of the college and its presence in Corry, describe how EC3 fills a post-secondary vacuum in Erie County, and talk about the pressing issues facing community college learners including access, the achievement gap, jobs, the barriers of post-secondary bureaucracy, and most importantly, how EC3 will attack these challenges to ensure every student of Erie County has access to affordable post-secondary education that leads to jobs.

From Trash to Treasure - Maintaining Erie African American History

Featuring Johnny Johnson, M.Ed.

This lecture will highlight the Lawrence Family Archives maintained by Ms. Ada Lawrence and their importance in exploring the history and legacy of Erie's African American community. It will discuss how these Archives came about, the role of the Harry T. Burleigh Society and the Burleigh Legacy Alliance in cataloging and digitizing them for research and public viewing aided by a grant from the Erie Community Foundation.
