Prior to February of 2022 some observers predicted that Ukraine did not stand a chance if Russia invaded. Kyiv was expected to fall in three days. Yet, Ukraine stands and fights. Sporting America: "Americans and their Games"

Thursday, March 2

7 - 8:30 p.m.

Jefferson Educational Society

Featuring Andrew Roth, Ph.D.

Sports – "the games Americans play" – are, perhaps to the surprise of some, one of American society's great engines of social progress.

Why? How?

In this new chapter in his The American Tapestry Project series, Jefferson Scholar-in-Residence Andrew Roth examines how sport – not the churches, not the schools, not government – transformed American society. They welcomed minorities and immigrants, and redefined womanhood more rapidly than many other institutions

While hardly a level playing field, sport is the great social leveler providing opportunity for all. In pursuit of victory, sports in American society became one of the prime engines in The American Tapestry Project's story of the ever-expanding definition of the "We" in "We the People".

The NWPA Innovation Beehive Network: Helping Entrepreneurs, Boosting Business

Friday, March 3

12 - 1:30 p.m.

Jefferson Educational Society

Featuring NWPA Innovation Beehive Network

Northwest Pennsylvania has a wealth of knowledge capital within its universities. While the universities have consistently served the region through work with companies and community organizations, few opportunities have been available for individuals and small businesses. The NWPA Beehive Network remedies this by providing services to entrepreneurs and small businesses with minimal barriers and no fee. The Network is a collaboration of all regional universities and the Erie County Library System. Each provides a unique set of services that complement each other to fill gaps that an entrepreneur may have in their skill set. Meanwhile, undergraduate students are provided with extraordinary work experiences that have a real impact on their community. The Network has been recognized as a unique and effective model for inter-university collaboration as well as an exceptional career-building experience for students. This presentation will explain the Innovation Beehive Network, its vision, challenges, impact, and future.
