2022 Spring Program Schedule Announced for Erie’s Jefferson and sites in Corry, Fairview

Erie, Pennsylvania (April 14) – Penn State Behrend Political Science Professor Robert Speel will kick off the 2022 spring term programming season at the Jefferson Educational Society by discussing a timely subject: gerrymandering in the United States.

Dr. Steel will talk about the origins of gerrymandering, why it has become more common, and the impact of the practice on American politics at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 20, at the Jefferson, 3207 State St., in Erie, Pennsylvania. The program is free and open to the public.

In all, 23 programs are planned during the spring term, including 14 in-person presentations at the Jefferson, four digital programs, and five programs at Jefferson satellite sites in Corry and Fairview through June 1. All events are open to the public.

“We are excited to continue the Jefferson Satellite Program after some initial programs and success during our winter term programming,” said Jefferson President Ferki Ferati. “Our goal is to continue to sponsor excellent and thought-provoking programs at the Jefferson but also to take our programming to other parts of the Erie region.”

A number of interesting programs are on tap in April and May at the Jefferson, including a number of lunchtime “Community Conversations” with Jennifer Tompkins of PennFuture on Earth Day; Millcreek Township Supervisor Kim Clear; a GIS mapping event with Gannon Professor Chris Magno; and with Erie Mayor Joe Schember. On April 21, at 7 p.m., Penn State Professor Joseph Beilein explores “Guerilla Warfare in the American Civil War.” Local historian Richard Arthur will speak about the role of U.S. Monuments on May 5; Gannon Professor Aaron Kerr will address Global Warming and regional solutions on May 9; and Michael Fuhrman will discuss plans for national passenger rail in the United States on May 23 in Fairview. During four digital programs, Raimy Fellows Susannah Faulkner, Jake Marsh, and Jessica Taylor will present their research, and Andrew Roth will be in conversation with Ben Speggen and Phil Payne on the seeds of discontent in 1968 to today. The digital programs are livestreamed on Facebook.

A “distinguished visiting speaker” presentation on global affairs is also planned during the term – former Global Summit speaker and Erie native Lieutenant General James Dubik will explore the Ukraine crisis and its larger context on June 1.

Among the term’s highlights are presentations by several Jefferson scholars-in-residence, including David Frew, Baher Ghosheh, Judy Lynch, and Andrew Roth, as well as a lecture on the Cold War by Dr. Ferki Ferati.
