The search for extraterrestrial life is one of the most exciting frontiers in Astronomy. First tentative clues were identified close to Earth in the form of the weird interstellar object `Oumuamua. Our civilization will mature once we find out who resides on our cosmic street by searching with our best telescopes for unusual electromagnetic flashes, industrial pollution of planetary atmospheres, artificial light or heat, artificial space debris, or something completely unexpected. We might be a form of life as primitive and common in the cosmos as ants are in a kitchen. If so, we can learn a lot from others out there.

Meeting the Challenges of Challenger Deep

After 17 years as a professor of geography and oceanography at Oregon State University, Dr. Dawn Wright was appointed Chief Scientist of Esri in 2011, and reports directly to Jack Dangermond on strengthening the scientific foundation for Esri software and services, while also representing Esri to the international scientific community. She maintains an affiliated faculty appointment within the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State.
Dawn has authored or co-authored over 180 articles and 13 books on geographic information science, as well as deep ocean mapping and conservation. She has participated in over 20 oceanographic research expeditions throughout the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, and Southern Oceans. In 1991 she became the first Black female to dive to the ocean floor in the deep submersible Alvin. On July 12, 2022 she became the first Black person of any gender to dive to Challenger Deep, the deepest point on Earth, and to successfully operate a sidescan sonar at that full-ocean depth. This was accomplished in the deep submersible Limiting Factor in collaboration with Victor Vescovo and his Caladan Oceanic team.
In April 2021 Dawn was elected to both the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. She has served on many advisory boards including the NOAA and EPA Science Advisory Boards, and the Science Advisory Boards of Conservation International, COMPASS Science Communication, and the Ocean Discovery XPRIZE. Dawn holds an Individual Interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Physical Geography and Marine Geology from UC-Santa Barbara, an M.S. in Oceanography from Texas A&M, and a B.S. cum laude in Geology from Wheaton College (Illinois). Fryday, a former Navy officer, is a leading organizer and public servant dedicated to clean energy. He served as president of Golden State Opportunity, a nonprofit organization working to end poverty in California.

Dr. Baher Ghosheh, a JES Scholar-in-Residence and expert in Middle Eastern studies, will give his presentation on women in Islam at the JES Redlands Global Summit 2022.
The presentation will focus on the role of women in Muslim societies since the foundation of Islam in the 7th Century. Particular attention will be paid to the great variety of women's experiences in the 57 countries that belong to the Organization of Islamic Conference. Recent developments following the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan and the deaths of Iranian women at the hands of the "Morality" police demonstrate women's extreme repression in a few Muslim countries. In Islam, like in Christianity and other faiths, the status of women depends on many factors; political, cultural, educational, and religious.
The changes brought about by the Arab Spring, globalization, access to education, social media, and the communications revolution give women opportunities to dramatically transform their role in many societies, including Muslim societies.
