Blues, Religion Take Center Stage in Brock Institute Music Night

The Jefferson Educational Society will host Rev. Charles Brock and musicians Jim Cuneo and Pat Cuneo in a live blues concert on Wednesday, September 29 on the Jefferson stage, 3207 State St.

The in-person event, which is free and open to the public, will start at 7 p.m.

Blues music, its roots, interwoven themes of religion, oppression, and the African-American experience will be in the spotlight during the September 29 program.

According to Rev. Brock's research, the term "the blues" refers to "blue devils," meaning melancholy and sadness. An early use of the term is found in George Colman's one-act farce, "Blue Devils." (1798) "Though the use of the phrase in African-American music may be older, it has been attested to since 1912, when Hart Wand's 'Dallas Blues' became the first copyrighted blues composition. … In lyrics the phrase is often used to describe a depressed mood."

Pre-registration is required by visiting www.jeserie.org or calling the Jefferson at 814.459.8000.

Walk-ins are not accepted, and registration will close at midnight prior the event.

The Jefferson Education Society requires that all patrons are vaccinated and masked. In the event that you cannot be vaccinated, a proof of negative COVID test must be provided.  Please see our FULL policy here.
