Phil Hayes was born in Portsmouth, Ohio. He attended Ohio State, Northwestern, and the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He graduated with a BA in liberal studies in 2006 from Gannon University and an MFA in 2008.  Mr. Hayes worked in radio news for seventeen years in Miami, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Chicago. He worked television news in Detroit, San Francisco, New York, Madison, and Erie for 35 years.
