Working Towards a Binational Great Lakes Waterfront Trail

August 5th,2025 | 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Speaker: John Hartig

Imagine a binational recreational trail along the largest chain of freshwater lakes in the world, connecting nations and communities along spectacular scenery. By linking existing trail networks, the eight Great Lakes states are exploring the development of a U.S. Great Lakes Waterfront Trail to connect to Canada's existing Great Lakes Waterfront Trail. The vision is for all residents and visitors of the eight Great Lakes states to be connected to and benefit from world-class freshwater, wildlife, recreation, and history through a U.S. Great Lakes Waterfront Trail. Learn more about this initiative, which is being coordinated by the Council of State Governments, with support from the eight Great Lakes states, nongovernmental organizations, and the National Park Service's Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance program, in close consultation with Canada's Great Lakes Waterfront Trail in Canada, from Dr. John Hartig, member of the Council of State Governments' U.S. Great Lakes Waterfront Trail Project Team.
