What lies Beneath Lake Erie? - Hydrographic Surveying with NOAA vessel Thomas Jefferson

What lies beneath Lake Erie? That's a question Thomas Loeper, Great Lakes Navigation Manager at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) will explore in this exciting presentation. Learn about hydrographic surveying that the vessel Thomas Jefferson conducted this year to create a complete 3D coverage of the sea floor of Lake Erie. One of the focus areas was the sandy peninsula around Presque Isle State Park. The goal is to update navigational charts and collect data for state and federal scientists.

NOAA's Great Lakes Navigation Manager

Tom Loeper started as the Great Lakes Navigation Manager in 2011 and resumed the role again in late 2021.  He has worked in many different positions in NOAA including modernizing NOAA's fleet of research and survey vessels, developing Print on Demand charts and publications as well as running the Nautical Publications unit for nearly 15 years.  Tom also served as a submarine Line Officer in the U.S. Navy before joining NOAA.  He enjoys working with a wide variety of people and fresh water issues spanning the eight States in the Great Lakes Basin.  Tom is a native of SE Pennsylvania and he earned undergraduate degrees from the Pennsylvania State University and Temple University and a Masters in Engineering Management from the University of Maryland.
