New Americans – Demographic Trends and Immigration Patterns in Erie, Pennsylvania (1960-2023)

"New Americans" examines varying population and immigration patterns in the United States, Pennsylvania, and specifically Erie, Pennsylvania from 1960 to 2023 from the perspective of a scholar and new American himself, Dr. Baher Ghosheh. Perhaps the most enlightening and inspiring part of the book focuses on the stories of new Americans who, against all odds, made it to the United States and to Erie, Pennsylvania. Their stories are often heart-wrenching yet gripping and inspiring. Their stories are the stories of America over many decades and centuries. They are the future of Erie and the future of America. Their energy, determination, persistence, and optimism should make everyone feel more hopeful that America's best days are ahead of us.

Baher Ghosheh, Ph.D. JES Scholar-in-Residence, JES Board of Trustees Chair

Dr. Baher Ghosheh, Ph.D., is a scholar-in-residence at the Jefferson Educational Society in Erie, Pennsylvania. An expert in Middle Eastern Studies, he holds a Ph.D. in Economic Development from SUNY-Buffalo and was a Professor of Middle Eastern Studies, cultural and economic Geography at Edinboro University until retiring in 2022. He has graduate degrees in International Relations/Middle Eastern Studies, International Trade, and Comparative Economic Development. A native of Jerusalem, Dr. Ghosheh has lived in eight countries, traveled to 70 countries. He and taught in Japan, China, Russia, Italy, and Morocco. He was awarded a Fulbright to conduct research in Malaysia and Singapore and was selected as the Pennsylvania Geographer of the Year and Edinboro University’s Educator of the Year. He regularly teaches for the Road Scholars program at the Chautauqua Institution.
