Robert Garland Residency: A Day in History – The Ides of March: March 15, 44 BC

Julius Caesar had conquered Spain and won the Civil War against his rival Pompey the Great. He had recently been appointed "Dictator in Perpetuity" and was the most powerful man alive. The Senate and all the instruments of government were under his control. There were rumors that at the net meeting a proposal was going to be put forward that he should be made king. Instead, a conspiracy of 80 senators formed to assassinate him at the next meeting of the Senate so long as he didn't get wind of the conspiracy. Meanwhile the 19-year-old Octavian, Caesar's adopted heir and the future Emperor Augustus, was waiting in the wings… 

 

This event is part of the "A Day in History: Week-in-Residency Series Exploring 'What a Difference a Day Makes'." Each lecture in this series highlights a specific day when the world altered course and brought us to where we are today, and each lecture also raises the tantalizing question: What if?   

 

Registrants are welcome but not required to attend all events to enjoy and learn from the individual lectures.

Robert Garland

Robert S J. Garland is the Roy D. and Margaret B. Wooster Emeritus Professor of the Classics, Colgate University. Garland is also the author of many books including but not limited to; The Greek Way of Death, The Eye of the Beholder, and Athens Burning: The Persian Invasion of Greece and the Evacuation of Attica (Witness to Ancient History).
