Robert Garland Residency: A Day in History – The Gunpowder Plot: Nov. 5, 1605

July 9th,2025 | 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Professor/Instructor/Speaker: Robert Garland

Henry VIII had broken from the Roman Catholic Church because the pope had refused to grant him a divorce. Since then, the newly formed Protestant Church had been effectively at war with the Catholic Church. He was first succeeded by his elder daughter Mary, aka Bloody Mary, who burned at the stake prominent Protestants, and then by Elizabeth I, his younger daughter, who executed Catholics. When James I came to the throne in 1603, the country was still bitterly divided. Two years later, Guy Fawkes led a Catholic plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament and kill the king. However, a letter revealing the plot was handed over to James just hours before the barrels of gunpowder stored in a crypt underneath the Houses of Parliament were about to explode…

Each lecture in this series highlights a specific day when the world altered course and brought us to where we are today, and each lecture also raises the tantalizing question: What if?
