The Persians under King Xerxes had invaded Greece with a massive army and navy. The Greeks had put up some resistance, notably the Spartans at Thermopylae, but through the 300 who gave their lives for what in effect was a suicide mission, the Persians advanced by land and sea. The Athenians wanted to hold the line in northern Greece, but many Greeks thought they should retreat. The Athenians were forced to evacuate their land in the wake of the Persian advance and had to watch their temples and homes being burned by the Persians. Robert S J. Garland is the Roy D. and Margaret B. Wooster Emeritus Professor of the Classics, Colgate University. Garland is also the author of many books including but not limited to; The Greek Way of Death, The Eye of the Beholder, and Athens Burning: The Persian Invasion of Greece and the Evacuation of Attica (Witness to Ancient History).
