Join members of the Jefferson Educational Society for a free program and tour of the historic schooner Lettie G. Howard at the H.O. Hirt Auditorium at Blasco Library. This special program will be held on the anniversary of the Battle of Lake Erie of 1813 and is designed to introduce Erie to the historic Lettie G. Howard, a wooden Fredonia schooner built in 1893 in Essex, Mass. It was formerly called the Mystic C and Caviare. Fred Langill, an Edinboro Borough Council member who was a co-founder of the Flagship Niagara League, will be the keynote speaker at the event as he describes the Howard’s special connections to Erie and the Langill family – Fred’s grandfather was one of its builders. In addition to a special presentation by Essex shipbuilders, the program will feature remarks by Langill and Flagship Niagara League Executive Director and Fleet Captain Billy Sabatini, a native of Natick, Mass.
The fishing schooner Lettie Howard has been offering day sails and training voyages this summer through the Niagara League and Erie Maritime Museum. The two-masted schooner is owned by South Street Seaport Museum in New York City.
