Dr. Ken Louie serves as Director of the Economic Research Institute of Erie (E.R.I.E.) and Associate Professor of Economics in the Black School of Business at Penn State Behrend. He holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in Economics from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and a B.A. in Economics from Northwestern University. Dr. Louie’s research focuses on the impact of international trade and finance on domestic economies, labor market performance, local economic development, and the economic development of China. His academic career includes international appointments as a Fulbright Lecturer in the People’s Republic of China and as a Visiting Associate Professor at the Johns Hopkins University–Nanjing University Center for Chinese and American Studies. He has also served as a Visiting Scholar at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. An award-winning educator, Dr. Louie has received multiple honors from Penn State Behrend, including the Council of Fellows Excellence in Teaching Award, the Graduate Student Association Excellence in Teaching Award, and the Guy W. Wilson Excellence in Advising Award. In addition to his academic work, he has consulting experience with GTE. Dr. Louie is deeply committed to fostering a collaborative learning environment grounded in shared responsibility between instructor and student. He emphasizes critical thinking, real-world application, and intellectual curiosity, encouraging students to actively engage with complex economic issues and develop a deeper understanding of the world around them.
