Erie Torch Club Presents: Erie’s Humbling Weather

March 7th,2018 | 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Professor/Instructor/Speaker: Tom Atkins

The Erie Torch Club, a member of the International Association of Torch Clubs, was founded in 1947 as the 84th club in The IATC. With a purpose to provide a forum where professionals across a variety of disciples can meet to engage in fellowship while enlightening one another, Erie Torch Club hosts monthly gatherings that feature a cocktail reception, a buffet-style dinner, and a lecture. For “Erie’s Humbling Weather,” Erie Torch Club welcomes Meteorologist Tom Atkins, who’s been reporting on Erie’s interesting – and yes, humbling – weather since 1988. Mr. Atkins will talk about his early experiences working for a private weather forecasting company in Iowa, to chasing tornadoes in his spare time, to how he was “highly motivated by Lake Effect Snow” to relocate in Erie, leading to his current work with Jet 24/Fox 66/YourErie.com. Tom Atkins

Tom Atkins, B.S. relocated from Des Moines, Iowa to Erie, Pennsylvania in 1988 because he was “highly motivated by the Lake Effect Snows of this area.” Trading tornadoes for blizzards, Mr. Atkins began forecasting Erie weather at WSEE-TV, but in 1995, he joined the JET Pinpoint Weather team of meteorologists as a weekend meteorologist and now anchors the weathercast on the weeknight evening and late news shows. He attended Iowa State University to study meteorology and broadcast journalism and also worked for a private weather forecasting company in Iowa through his college career. In addition to weather forecasting, Mr. Atkins teaches meteorology at Penn State Behrend and enjoys speaking engagements throughout the area.
