East Erie Satellite: DEP Gas Well Adoption and Transfer Workshop
The City of Erie is nothing short of unique. With miles of lake shore, rugged bluffs and a productive lake plain, many often think of the natural beauty that surrounds the city. But underground, shale is prominent and holds something of great value: natural gas. Throughout the Commonwealth, home-use gas wells are abundant, and the City of Erie has some of the densest concentrations in the state. These gas wells are often located near the homes and businesses to which they provide their energy. While sometimes hiding under manhole covers, decorative rocks, within basements or warehouses, these wells often fail to meet the regulatory requirements involved with gas well operation in Pennsylvania. As homes and businesses change hands, these wells are often forgotten and not transferred properly through the Department of Environmental Protection to new owners. This presentation seeks to explain well transferring, PADEP well mapping applications, and how to locate records for existing gas wells associated with home usage.

Kyle H. Thomas
Kyle Thomas is an Oil and Gas inspector for the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. From drilling to plugging, Kyle oversees regulation enforcement throughout Erie and Crawford counties and has done so for more than five years. Prior to becoming an OGI, he spent over 35 years in the oil and gas industry advancing his skills in leasing, staking, drilling, completing, producing and plugging both conventional and nonconventional oil and gas wells. When Kyle is not enforcing oil and gas regulations, he enjoys spending time with family and friends, golfing and rebuilding automobiles.
Elyse C. Henshaw
Elyse Henshaw is a Water Quality Specialist with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. Through this position Elyse oversees operations of oil and gas wells throughout Erie and Crawford counties and enforces state regulations related to erosion, sedimentation and pollutants that may threaten Commonwealth waterways or waterbodies. Prior to working for the Department, Elyse has worked in the environmental field for over a decade and has had the privilege of assisting with prescribed fires, tracking timber rattlesnakes, raising freshwater mussels, providing educational outreach and building relationships between agencies. Outside of work, Elyse enjoys spending time with her family and friends, biking and snowmobiling.
