American Civil War Portrayal: Bushwhacker William Clarke Quantrill

Few men of the Civil War era were as infamous as William Clarke Quantrill. He orchestrated the Confederate raid on Lawrence, Kansas in 1863, resulting in the murder of 180 unarmed individuals. Before that, Quantrill led a varied life, adopting different personas and engaging in different activities. Join Prof. Beilein as he draws from his research and new book "A Man by Any Other Name: William Clarke Quantrill and the Search for American Manhood" (University of Georgia Press, 2023) and provides a comprehensive and authentic portrait of Quantrill, shedding light on the enigmatic figure and offering insights into the experiences of the Civil War generation. This portrayal offers a unique perspective on antebellum life and guerrilla warfare, while also examining the concept of American manhood in the mid-nineteenth century.
