Programming at the Jefferson Educational Society

The Jefferson Educational Society offers different programs during the Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall terms. Some of the past and current programs include the Global Summit, Metro 100, Brock Institute Lectures, Community Conversations, Jefferson Satellite programs, and other special programs.

Programming has been a cornerstone of the Jefferson Educational Society since its beginning. From the launch of the annual Global Summit, which itself grew from a two-and-half day series to one spread over six weeks, to the total of annual events to over 100, to the launch of the Satellite Programming initiative throughout Erie County, to the more than 200 digital programs livestreamed and broadcasted to the public during the pandemic and ongoing, JES programming continues to expand in an effort to make our events more accessible to the community in new ways.

PRESIDENT LINCOLN'S UNIFYING LEADERSHIP AND RELEVANCE FOR TODAY

Wednesday, February 9

JES Website and YouTube

Featuring Brock Institute for Mega Issues director, Rev. Charles Brock, M.Litt.

Drawing from his extensive research on U.S. presidents, Rev. Charles Brock will focus on President Abraham Lincoln's ability to unify Americans in a time of crisis and turmoil. Brock argues that we need another Lincoln today – badly. We need to reconcile our acute political differences. Noting that churches often cooperate now compared to when they certainly didn't before 1900, he asks if America could do the same in politics? For the future of the United States, he hopes we can.

GREAT BOOKS DISCUSSION COURSE: "COUNTERPARTS"

Thursdays: NOW February 10 - March 17
3-4:30 p.m.
Jefferson Educational Society
Featuring Corrine Egan, B.A.
"Counterparts" presents pairs of contrasting texts that interact with one another in differing and surprising ways. These texts may take opposing views on issues or contend with ideas presented by other scholars. Together they offer a range of perspectives on topics such as art and war, love and fidelity, gender, aspiration, and death. The strong combination of modern and classic literature in Counterparts provides us with much to contemplate and discuss.

VALENTINE'S DAY: A VERY SHORT HISTORY

Monday, February 14
12 - 1 p.m. EST
Facebook Livestream Event
Featuring JES Scholar-in-Residence, Andrew Roth, Ph.D.

Although Valentine's Day is not an official holiday anywhere, it is celebrated in more countries around the world than any other holiday. Where did this rose-hued holiday custom of gift-giving, card sharing, chocolate consuming courtship, and romance originate?

Did you know that every February over 36 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate are sold, that the average person spends $164.76 for the day, that approximately one billion cards are exchanged around the world, that $2 billion-plus will be spent on flowers, and that each year approximately 18 percent of women send themselves flowers?

NOW ONLINE!:

THE ROLE OF THE HUMAN IMMUNE SYSTEM DURING COVI-19

Thursday, March 31

7 - 8:30 p.m.

Jefferson Educational Society

Featuring Distinguished Visiting Lecturer, Leonard Calabrese, D.O.

The global pandemic of COVID-19 has taken a heavy toll on our society and its impact has not been equally distributed across the population. The most vulnerable to experience severe disease and death are those of advancing age and those with one of many diseases of the modern world driven by low-grade inflammation. These common disorders include obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndrome and fatty liver, cardiovascular and renal disease among others that are growing rapidly in modern life and already collectively account for nearly 60 percent of all deaths prior to COVID-19. Given that our immune health is directly tied to our behaviors and environmental exposures, advances in the understanding of how to modify our behaviors and exposures (what we eat, how we sleep and exercise, and how we handle our stress) as well as understanding the impact of factors such as pollution and global warming may offer hope for greater population-based immune health to prepare us for future pandemics and offer greater resistance to chronic diseases.
