Gracchi, Marius, Sulla, and the Crisis of the Roman Republic

February 5th,2020 | 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM
Professor/Instructor/Speaker: Ferki Ferati,Ed.D.

The end of the Punic Wars and the destruction of Carthage meant Rome was
the supreme power in the Mediterranean. A rapid expansion of the Republic
into three continents brought great wealth and the demand to distribute that
wealth to a wider demographic. This lecture will explore the reforms of the
Gracchi brothers, the populist movement Marius, and Sulla's determination
for conserving the old Republic. The civil wars between Marius and Sulla
were the first signs of the decline of the Roman Republic, led to the First
Triumvirate (Pompey, Crassus, Caesar), and eventually the destruction of the
Republic and the creation of Augustus' Empire.
